I recently received information that ALL Ampullariidae are not allowed in my state, either by import from another state or offered for sale within the state. I am not certain if this info is correct, although a couple of articles I googled did indicate this is true. Does anyone have any definitive info on this? If so, not only am I stuck with a lot of baby snails I am unable to sell, but I recently received snails shipped to me from two out of state sources... I assume (Silly me!) that these dealers had permits, and if so, how were they able to ship snails to me? (One shipment, the box was clearly marked "Harmless Aquatic Snails")

I don't think this is true. I just got a permit to ship last week from the USDA.

Check with your state department of agriculture and the department of fish & game.

This is a very poorly worded rule and shows a very poor understanding of applesnails. They want to stop plant eaters, but they have put the blanket over the entire snail family.

There seems to be some conflicts in this rule that would allow me to ship snails to you from NY, but once there you could not move them.

You would think they would require lawmakers to read & write first...

(That state that even I have to think hard about spelling in full!)
O.k., so if I understand correctly, I received two seperate shipments of snails, one from Florida, one from Texas, both of which are listed as "quarantined" states from which I should not have been able to receive snails, as apparently this stupid law does indeed cover ALL Applesnails, AND I cannot sell (Or even legally, give to anyone) any snails within my state.

So now I have about 100-200 baby snails that I need to euthanize??????

I would just keep my mouth shut and take good care of them. Get permits from the USDA to ship to other states and sell them on Aquabid.

Don't worry. The USDA does not seem to talk to other agencies unless they are called in for some reason.

There does seem to be quite a lot of confusion here about this....a friend of mine works for the Wildlife & Fisheries Dept, he was over here one evening and we had an interesting discussion, even THEY don't really know exactly how to define the regulations as applied to various types of applesnails. Interestingly, I was in a pet/aquarium store in a nearby town the other day and there was an entire tank full of gold & wild color brigs for sale. :snail:

We have a native "apple snail" already. It lives in the Southernmost part of the state. We do grow rice here so I can see the introduction of other species would complicate matters. I live on the very Norther edge of MS it freezes here every winter for a few weeks and we have about 2 months near freezing.

He is probably talking about the Paludosa.

James, not all apple snails are created equal. the Cana is a voracious plant eater and will snuff out entire ecosystems. Whereas, the Paludosa is a bottom feeder and rarely eats plants.

They may all look different but they all have their own characteristics and diets.

It may freeze where you are but all you need is one wayward egret with a clutch of eggs on his leg and the next thing you know you are neck deep in Canas.
